Warwick Castle

10th May 2023Mrs N McKIERNAN

Year 2 were surrounded by one thousand years of jaw-dropping history, magic and adventure in their unforgettable trip to Warwick Castle!

This visit enriched their real life experience of castles and helped the pupils to understand and make links with their current history topic; People of the Past.

We watched the birds of prey swooping over our heads (luckily, they didn’t steal our sandwiches); saw the mighty Trebuchet in action; explored the peacock gardens and even had a go at putting our heads in the guillotine! Everyone had a great time and is ready to use all of their experiences in their writing.

Teaching Talons

30th March 2023Mrs N McKIERNAN

As part of their learning during British Science Week, pupils in Year 1 studied all about science careers involving animals. From vets and zoologists to marine biologists, the pupils loved discovering all about how to care for animals. During the week, they were visited by Teaching Talons who came in and allowed all the pupils a hands on experience as well as learning about all the different furry and not so furry visitors. Everyone had a great time meeting Chip the dog, the lizards, ferrets, owls and even a tortoise. They were able to use this knowledge in their writing and as part of their science projects.

Science Spectacular!

30th March 2023Mrs N McKIERNAN

Our annual British Science Week spectacular was once again a huge success. Pupils from all year groups had the opportunity to learn about careers in science as part of the Smash The Stereotypes theme and develop their own board project based on what they discovered. All of the pupils displayed tremendous enthusiasm, confidence and great pride for their career.

The week culminated with a fantastic science event for both staff and students. All year groups had the opportunity to learn about a specific science career, research and develop their own science fair project based on their chosen career. The careers on offer ranged from: cardiologists, vets, doctors, astronauts and even forensic scientists. With all year groups attending it is safe to say that everyone had a fantastic time.

Throughout the week, we were also running events during lunch times, lessons and even an exciting collaboration with several of the local schools that meant children had the opportunity to make connections and enhance their science knowledge further. We can’t wait to build on this next year!

Year 6 Residential: Hudnall Park

23rd March 2023Mrs N McKIERNAN

Year 6 pupils have just returned from an action packed adventure to Hudnall Park. Despite the rain, the pupils had an amazing time all together out in the remote Hertfordshire woodlands. Everyone was excited to try all the different activities and began the residential by building shelters in the forest. Following this, they all had the opportunity to try archery for the first time, which they loved as well as climb the centre’s large traverse wall. The evening was full of fun and games and even a late night walk into the woods! Not surprisingly, the children enjoyed staying up late and having their first sleepover with all their friends.

The following day brought even more adventures as the children got to build and race their own go-karts. Zip-lining down the very large hill was definitely a highlight for them all; even the pupils who weren’t sure at first took the plunge and had the best time. The final activity saw the pupils take part in the low ropes assault course which was incredibly fun.

The pupils were buzzing on their return as they couldn’t wait to share their experiences with all their friends and family. Check out the gallery below to see some of their advantures from the trip.

EYFS: People who help us!

23rd March 2023Mrs N McKIERNAN

For Science week, pupils across EYFS have been learning about the work doctors, dentists and nurses do to help keep us healthy. They had a visit from the dentist and learnt about keeping our teeth nice and strong. We were so lucky to all recieve a toothbrush and toothpaste from school.

They also had a visit from Nurse Nicole who showed them how a stethoscope works, what she has to do in her job everyday and why her uniform is essential. Thank you Nurse Nicole!

Pupils in EYFS also had an important visit from the Hannah at Active Luton who teaches First Aid and they learnt how to use a bandage correctly and five important things to remember when helping someone.
D- danger
R- response
A- airways
B- breathing
C- comfort

The pupils will be using their new found knowledge to teach other pupils about these important jobs during the science careers event.

Books Glorious Books!

28th February 2023Mrs N McKIERNAN

At Denbigh Primary School, we love nothing more than celebrating our passion and enjoyment for reading. This week marks World Book Day but we thought why stop at one day when we can celebrate for a whole week. Book based activities are happening across the school from an exciting bear hunt in the lower school to pupils creating reading buddies to share stories with. We are only on day 2 and already we have had some great guest readers in to meet the children and share stories with them all.

We would like to express our thanks to Luton Fire Service Department, Beds Community Police team and JP Smith from Boxing Saves Lives for hosting to some excellent sessions with our pupils. Throughout the week, we will have a number of other guest readers as well as celebrating with our annual dress up day on Friday.

Year 4 Ships Ahoy!

23rd February 2023Mrs N McKIERNAN

Year 4 pupils have recently begun their new curriculum topic on rivers. They learnt that a shipwright designs and builds boats, so the pupils were challenged to design and construct their own boats from everyday classroom materials. They then tested them on water to see if they would float! It was a fantastic opportunity to see them applying skills in design, technology, science and geography; perhaps we have some future engineers among us!

Young Voices 2023

9th February 2023Mrs N McKIERNAN

Young Voices is the UK’s largest singing concert for primary school children. We were delighted to once again be involved this year, and pupils from our Year 5 and 6 choir did a fantastic job representing all the Luton Schools at the concert. The choir has been practising for months to perform a selection of songs and dances for thousands of people at Wembley Arena. They were also lucky enough to perform with singer Heather Small and the World Champion Beat Boxcollective! Aleesha from Year 5 said, ” It was the best experience ever! The whole day was full of excitement and it was great performing with all my friends.”

Pupils in the choir will now begin preparations for Luton’s Singing Spectacular concert in June.

NSPCC Number Day

6th February 2023Mrs N McKIERNAN

On Friday 3rd February, pupils across the school celebrated all things number! From outfits including digits to entering number competitions the pupils had a fantastic day diving into mathematics. Every class was set the loose change challenge to see who could raise the most money and also create the longest line using their change. Pupils in 6HD created the longest line measuring 3113cm but the winning class with the most amount of change was 6RG raising £59.82. This has allowed us as a school to raise over £400 for the NSPCC, the money will be used to support this amazing charity.
